Banksy & Street Artists Exhibition

Sagawa Art Museum
Finished
Street art originated from graffiti painted in downtown New York in the 1970s. At that time, amidst the whirlwind of poverty, the Vietnam War, gang wars, and other social unrest, young people painted messages of rebellion against society on buildings throughout the city in all directions. Graffiti, along with breakdancing and DJing, was created in the hip-hop culture, which is known as a "culture of rebellion" against racial discrimination and other forms of social injustice. Graffiti became a huge social phenomenon, and its momentum continued unabated, eventually taking the world by storm.

Banksy, is the poster child of street art. Based in the United Kingdom, the enigmatic artist is sometimes called an "art terrorist" for his works that have suddenly appeared on the walls of buildings, zoos, hotels, and everywhere else, and he is now attracting worldwide attention. His darkly humorous expressions, which include political messages and social satire, have caused a great sensation and have been covered by many media outlets, and he has become a pop icon of our time.

This exhibition will take a close-up look at the currents of graffiti culture and the various techniques of expression used by street artists, which have not received much attention in the past, to explore the essence of street art, with Banksy as a point of entry.
