A Thousand Scenes, Ten-Thousand Colors: Is Tohoku Painting Possible?

Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels
Finished
Natsunosuke Mise and Masatake Kozaka, instructors of Japanese and Western painting at Tohoku University of Art & Design, launched a project asking, “Is Tohoku Painting Possible?” in 2009. “Ark Plan”, a work symbolic of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, became a key component of this project. Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels, a museum with a permanent collection that includes a series of paintings depicting the horrors of war in the 20th century, presents the exhibition “Is Tohoku Painting Possible?” There may be parallels to be found between the Hiroshima Panels and the Tohoku painting project.

Iri Maruki and Toshi Maruki, known as co-creators of "The Hiroshima Panels", were also interested in folk tales from various regions and drew many picture books, often visiting the Tohoku region and painting landscapes. The rich and abundant life and stories of people rooted in the land were important themes throughout the lives of these two painters, who lived through turbulent times.
