The Abyssinian Plateau: To You, in 1936 – Encounters with Old Italian Army Photographs

Purple
Finished
This exhibition centers on essays by the visual anthropologist Itsushi Kawase and his vintage photographs of the Italian army. These 200 or so images, believed to have been taken by Italian soldiers during the Italian invasion of the Ethiopian Empire (1935-1941), were purchased at an Italian flea market and later passed through the hands of acquaintances before Kawase acquired them. It may be the unique characteristics of physical photography that allow the Ethiopia of the past time to reveal itself suddenly before our eyes. Perceptions of history change according to times and circumstances, and the ways in which images appear vary as well. How will you see these photographs in July 2022?
