Artists

Taku Obata
While practicing break dancing himself, artist Taku Obata continues to create sculptures and paintings expressing its intense and complex movements synchronized with the unique rhythms of hip-hop. Obata explains the relationship between dance and art in terms of "volume.” In dance, the "volume" of the body does not increase or decrease, but a certain quantity itself moves and changes, giving rise to expression. On the other hand, in the creation of three-dimensional and two-dimensional works, new possibilities of expression are created by increasing or decreasing the volume of materials such as clay, wood, or paint. The physical movement that accompanies these creative activities also represents an important correlation with dance for Obata.

For this exhibition, Obata has created three paintings: a black-and-white pair of “b-boy” break dancers embodying the shifting of volumes; A work with magenta and cyan colors that can be interpreted as an abstract representation of the dancer's trajectory and energy; also, a large black-and-white piece that represents the dance of 50 b-boys in relation to volume.
