Sunset and sunrise are natural phenomena that visit everyone equally, every day. Everything that lives, does so alongside the eternal, flowing rhythms of the cosmos.
The boundless riches of sunset and sunrise lie in the variety of symbolic and interpretive possibilities they offer: sleeping and awakening, ending and beginning, death and life, darkness and light, to name just a few. The mystical, liminal time around sunset and sunrise is referred to as the “magic hour,” and indeed, the privilege of witnessing the magical, moving scenes at these times of the day is not dissimilar to encountering an unexpected work of art.
In displays that mobilize the rich imagery derived from sunset and sunrise as a starting point to showcase its collection, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art welcomes a guest artist with an Aichi connection – Kobayashi Takanobu – several of whose tranquil yet charismatic works will serve as very special guides to the exhibition.
