Saya Okubo
Saya Okubo was born in Fukuoka in 1992, completed the graduate course in painting at Kyoto University of the Arts in 2017, and is currently based in Kyoto. She creates paintings in which two separate elements coexist: the symbolic image expressed as an outline, and the phenomenal image undulating with a sense of materiality. The various parts of the human body that serve as motifs, as well as all the poses that people use in their daily lives, are based on Okubo's daily drawings. For Okubo, painting is an ambiguous form of expression that can be created both as an object and as a plane, and this is what motivates her to pursue painting.

Mitsukoshi Contemporary Gallery is pleased to present more than 20 of Okubo’s works, including a new series, new works in a recent series using corrugated tin as a base, and a new works in a long-running series using canvas panels. The gallery hopes that this exhibition will provide a space where, through Okubo’s paintings, we can once again reflect on the distortions and fluctuations that arise from uncertainty.
