Churyo Sato
Born in Miyagi Prefecture, Churyo Sato (1912-2011) spent his youth in Hokkaido before moving to Tokyo to become a painter. Later, fascinated by Rodin and other modern French sculptors, he studied at what is now called Tokyo University of the Arts and soon after graduation participated in the founding of the sculpture society Shinseisaku Kyokai. During the war, he was drafted to Manchuria and interned in Siberia for three years. After his demobilization, he pursued figurative sculpture and left a significant mark on the postwar history of Japanese sculpture.

This exhibition focuses on three representative works by Sato. "Gunma Man" is acclaimed for its realism and representation of a Japanese face by Japanese hands; "Hat, Summer" was inspired by modern Italian sculpture and incorporates the clothes and hats worn by young women of the time; The long-selling picture book "Okina Kabu" (Big Turnip) has been admired since its publication in 1962 for its vivid depictions and scene development. The backgrounds of these three masterpieces will be revealed through Sato's own collection of works by Rodin, Moore, Marini, and others, as well as his own words about them.
