Ryoji Ikeda
Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art presents a solo exhibition by Ryoji Ikeda (b. 1966), a composer and artist based in Paris and Japan. Ikeda has produced a number of immersive works that use technology, light, and sound to stir the viewer's senses. This show, Ikeda's first large-scale exhibition at a museum in Japan since 2009, will spotlight his recent activities, including new works.

Since 2000, Ikeda has been searching for ways to express himself using data as a theme. He is particularly interested in data related to scientific fields such as DNA information, elementary particles, and the universe, incorporating these subjects into his own work presenting new ways of perceiving the world through data. For example, in his "data-verse" series, he collects public data from NASA and many other scientific organizations, processes it, converts it, and projects it in high-resolution videos. Ikeda’s works are experienced visually and aurally, creating a viewing experience that draws people into the world of vast amounts of data they are usually unaware of.

In addition to projections on the museum’s 15-meter-high atrium, the images and sounds in each exhibition room will be connected at times, creating a resonance between the works and the unique architectural space of the renovated brick warehouse. The exhibition expands on the possibilities of the museum space, which was built about 100 years ago as a brewery and transformed into an art museum.
