This exhibition was organized within the larger framework of the "Hors-les-murs" (Beyond the Wall) program, a worldwide presentation of selected collections held by the Fondation Louis Vuitton. In addition to Tokyo, the program is presented at Espace Louis Vuitton in Munich, Venice, Beijing, Seoul, and Osaka.

American artist Rashid Johnson (b. 1977) studied photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 2001, his first series of photographs quickly earned him a reputation in the United States as part of the post-civil rights generation known as Post Black. Post-Black was comprised of creators who refused to be lumped together as mere "black artists" and demanded a complex redefinition of their own identities. Later, in 2006, the group moved to New York City, where its activities have diversified to include sculpture, painting, drawing, film, performance, and installation.

Plateaus" (2014) forms part of a series of installations, and Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo will focus on this important artist with this iconic work from the Fondation Louis Vuitton collection.
