Pompeii

The Miyagi Museum of Art
Finished
Pompeii, an ancient city that existed in southern Italy. With a view of the Gulf of Naples to the west, the city prospered from the 2nd century B.C. onward due to its scenic beauty, fertile land, and strategic location for transportation. The city eventually developed as a Roman villa, but in 79, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius to the northwest of the city buried it all.

Excavations that finally began in the 18th century and have continued to the present day are truly a "time capsule" being opened. Pompeii and the surrounding ruins are a treasure trove of information on the life of the people of the ancient Roman city, and the results of the excavations over the years for the study of ancient history, art, and cultural history are immeasurable.

This exhibition, with the full cooperation of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, presents approximately 130 items, some of which are on display for the first time in Japan, and introduces the richness of life in Pompeii based on the results of the excavations. The mosaics, frescoes, statues, and artifacts on display are all masterpieces of the museum. Among them, the finely detailed mosaics excavated from the "House of the Fauns," the largest and oldest house in Pompeii, are a must-see.
