Taro Okamoto
Taro Okamoto (1911-1996), known for his "Tower of the Sun," the theme pavilion for the 1970 Japan World Exposition (Osaka Expo), is an artist who continues to fascinate people of all ages today. A major retrospective of his artistic life will be held this year.

In 1929, Taro Okamoto went to France, where he established his identity as a painter while being influenced by abstract expression. Upon his return to Japan, he advocated "contrapuntalism," which became the core of his artistic philosophy, and developed his theories on culture and art not only through his works but also in his books such as "Art Today" and "Japanese Tradition." His work such as the huge sculptures and murals in public spaces, with "Tower of the Sun" at the top, symbolize his belief that "art belongs to the masses," and for this reason, even after his death, they continue to attract many people.

Because of the wide range of his expressive activities, Taro was often asked, "What is your main profession?" Taro's answer was "human beings - people who live fiercely as whole beings. His expressive activities, in which he always boldly and solitarily delved into his fears and anxieties about the unknown, were an attempt to "bet one's whole self" on the world without being constrained by small boundaries and to evoke in people the richness of fundamental human endeavors. Experiencing Taro's works, which contain his thoughts and way of life, may provide an opportunity to find hints for surviving powerfully in today's unstable society. This exhibition traces the life of Taro Okamoto, introducing not only his representative works but also his later works that have not received much attention until now.
