Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to present the Mika Ninagawa exhibition "Flowers, Twinkling Light". This exhibition will be held concurrently with "Mika Ninagawa: Flowers, Twinkling Light Garden" at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum from June 25 [Sat], and will feature photographs and videos of flowers of the four seasons in Japan, shot since 2021 in various locations in Japan with the pandemic.

Mika Ninagawa is one of Japan's leading contemporary photographers and continues to work creatively in a variety of fields, including film, design, and fashion. With her unique worldview clad in vivid colors and dynamism, she has always led the times as an expressive artist. The works in this exhibition show a new world beyond glamour and are filled with light and soft "kosai shoku" (light colors).

Ninagawa's photographs to date have been linked to a variety of fiction and multi-layered images, such as reminiscences, dreams, and illusions. The works in this exhibition are photographed from a different approach, contrasting the present with the future. The light on the flowers is captured in a way that echoes the flickering emotions of the landscape that spreads out beyond them. In the work with neon tubes, Ninagawa's image is reinforced by the use of verbal expressions overlaid on the photographs of light-embedded flowers. The mixture of natural light captured by the photographs and the artificial light of the neon tubes overlaps with the image of people walking in harmony with nature.

The video works in this exhibition will be experienced within a cubic space. The floor and back of the cubic space will be covered with LED displays, while the walls and ceiling will be projected by a projector. Viewers will sit in a space similar to a tea ceremony room and share the visual experience with others. They can also view the scene from a short distance away. The works to be screened are "The Butterfly Season", "An eternity in a moment", and "Flashing before our eyes”. Formless fiction is one aspect of the future. On the other hand, it is also a possibility that will open up in a variety of ways, depending on how we will get there.
