Shunsuke Matsumoto
Shunsuke Matsumoto was born at the end of the Meiji era and lived as a painter during the tumultuous period from the Sino-Japanese War to the Second World War. Influenced by Western classical painting, Matsumoto sought a new style of painting for a new era, and in the short 20 years of his painting career, he showed a wide variety of development. This exhibition commemorates the 110th anniversary of Matsumoto's birth and features a wide range of his works, from his early "Building" with black outlines, which was selected for the first time at the Nika Exhibition, to his original tranquil urban landscape "Bridge (behind Tokyo Station)" and his representative work "Standing Figure", as well as "Girl" painted after the war with rough brushwork on the red-brown ground, which left important marks on the Japanese modern Western painting scene in the early Showa period. The exhibition features 25 oil paintings and drawings by Matsumoto, as well as original illustrations by related artists for his magazine “Zakkicho" from the museum's collection.
