Kathleen Jacobs
A solo exhibition by the New York-based artist Kathleen Jacobs, whose works are created by wrapping canvas around a tree trunk and copying the patterns of its bark. The unique method incorporates the natural environment and the process of change into the fabric. Jacobs’ conceptual paintings, which transcend the boundaries of two-dimensional art, have garnered worldwide attention. She has exhibited in a variety of venues in the United States and abroad over the course of her 30-year career.

Jacobs’ minimalist paintings, reminiscent of early Ming-dynasty autumn and winter landscape paintings with their wide margins and sense of tremendous distances, are rooted in her experience in the 1980s living and studying traditional Chinese art with her former father-in-law, Huang Yongyu, a painter considered a living national treasure in China. She says she was "inspired by the tremendous scale of the paintings and Chinese poetry of the 14th to 16th centuries.” The simple visual language of ink and line, expressed largely with a few strokes of the brush, and the experience of learning calligraphy from ancient rubbings of characters carved in stone, led to her own unique technique of tree frottage.

This will be Jacobs’ first exhibition in Asia. At Fergus McCaffrey, she will mainly exhibit large paintings, and at the CADAN space, she will show relatively small paintings and three-dimensional works created in 2012.
