Joan Miró
Joan Miró (1893-1983), an artist born in Barcelona, Spain, is widely known in Japan as one of the greatest masters of the 20th century, but it is not widely known that Miró had a deep interest in Japanese culture and a fascination with Japan from his youth. On the other hand, in Japan, Miró's works have been introduced since the 1930s, and in 1940, the first monograph ever of his work was published. Since his first visit to Japan in 1966, Miró developed a close friendship with Shuzo Takiguchi, a poet and art critic from Toyama Prefecture, and the two have collaborated on several works together.

This exhibition is the first to focus on the relationship between Miró and Japan. Through a collection of Miró's works from Spain, New York, and Japan, as well as Japanese folk art objects left in his studio and a variety of related materials, this exhibition will introduce the surprisingly deep connection between Miró's art and Japanese culture.
