Hokusai Katsushika
Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849), one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period, is one of the most famous Japanese artists in the world. His works, such as "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and "Hokusai Manga," have an unforgettable impact and are highly popular both in Japan and abroad.
As for Hokusai's relationship with the rest of the world, the influence of Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, and other Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters on Hokusai, as well as the influence of Japonisme, especially in France, is well known. However, there are also many collectors and researchers in the United Kingdom, and the history of the love for Hokusai can be traced back to the 19th century. The British Museum has a large collection of Hokusai's masterpieces acquired from several collectors, and the quality of the collection is one of the best in the world.
This exhibition focuses on the British Museum's collection of Hokusai's work and traces the evolution of Hokusai's painting career along with masterpieces of Japanese fiction. The exhibition focuses on the thirty years between Hokusai's 60th birthday and his death at the age of 90 and shows how he produced many masterpieces. The exhibition will also focus on the collectors who brought Hokusai's works to the British Museum, highlighting their love of Japanese art.
