Hisui Sugiura: Epoch-Making Modern Designs

Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hisui Sugiura, Saburosuke Okada, Tsuguharu Fujita et al.
This is the first major retrospective exhibition in Kyushu, bringing together the wide-ranging and diverse work of Japan's first graphic designer, Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965).

Born in Ehime, Japan, Sugiura trained as a Japanese-style painter before becoming a designer, a profession that was not yet recognized at the time.

His clear and sophisticated designs, based on the solid lines cultivated through sketching, combined with pop and colorful colors and lovely motifs and shapes, have a timeless appeal that has not faded at all.
This exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of Sugiura's work, including posters, designs, book bindings, and other representative works, as well as sketches, photographs, collected items, and other related materials that illustrate the creative process, along with works by his contemporaries, including Saburosuke Okada and Tsuguharu Fujita.
