Gabrielle Chanel
Gabrielle Chanel (1883–1971) was one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. In the 1920s, her simple yet sophisticated creations spearheaded the new image of the dynamic woman, favouring practicality and comfort. Chanel herself also became a fashion icon and the embodiment of her style, frequently sporting the Chanel suits, which were popular after the war. This international touring exhibition, which is based on the Gabrielle Chanel: Manifeste de Mode shown at the Palais Galliera, Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, has been reframed for Japan. It is the first retrospective dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel’s work to be shown in Japan in 32 years. Visitors will get a feel for her creations through archival images that enhance the displays of Chanel suits, little black dresses and other distinctive outfits that embody her ”manifeste de mode” (fashion manifesto), as well as her accessories and the Chanel N°5 perfume.
