Donald Keene 100th Anniversary - Donald Keene and Motoichi Izawa

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished

Artists

Donald Keene, Motoichi Izawa et al.
Donald Keene (1922-2019), who qualified to study in Japan, spent about two years in Kyoto from 1953 to 1955. He studied Basho at Kyoto University's graduate school, immersed himself in compiling "Selected Japanese Literature" at his lodgings in Muhinshu-an, studied calligraphy at Chishakuin Temple, and learned kyogen from Shigeyama Sennojo, all of which were invaluable to Keane's ongoing love affair with the Japanese language.

One of the "Japanese" Keene met while studying in Kyoto, including Michio Nagai, Yukio Mishima, Junichiro Tanizaki, and Kenichi Yoshida, was the painter Motoichi Izawa (1909-1998). Together, they visited Noh stages, exhibitions, shrines, and temples, and talked with each other, which brought about a change in Izawa, who had shunned the idea of painting Kyoto's scenery. After returning to the US, Izawa's "Mibu Kyogen" hung on the wall of Keane's New York apartment, connecting him with Kyoto.

This exhibition, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Donald Keene's birth, will introduce their work and materials, focusing on Keene's interaction with Kyoto and Izawa. The exhibition traces their "discovery" of Japan/Kyoto through their interactions and work.
