Seibo Kitamura: Family and Life

Inokashira Park Zoo
Finished

Artists

Seibo Kitamura
Seibo Kitamura (1884-1987) worked on many large-scale sculptures with his students and craftsmen during his life, including his masterpiece “Peace Statue”. This exhibition focuses on the aspect of Kitamura’s private life and introduces his family-themed works, daily life tools, and work tools.

Kitamura began to create works using his close family as models in the late Taisho era, however, most of his works were small and were exhibited under his own name or kept in his possession. “Grandson of generals” and “Laughing girl” were cast in bronze many times after the war and until the end of Kitamura’s life, and they show us a different side of a father who loves his children. The exhibition also features daily life and work items that Kitamura used in his studio until his later years. The calligraphy he enjoyed in his later years, his favorite collection of inked pottery, and the teacups and cooking utensils used by many of his students and visitors show the close connection between work and daily life.
