Hiroshi Yoshida
The Western-style painter Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) is known as a master of landscape painting. This exhibition explores the world of beauty captured by Yoshida Hiroshi by introducing approximately 200 woodblock prints he immersed himself in during the latter half of his life, as well as oil paintings, watercolors, sketchbooks, and woodblocks.

In 1899, Yoshida went to the U.S. with watercolors he had painted in Japan and sold his own works to finance his trip to Europe. From the latter half of the Taisho period (1912-1926), he studied to integrate the realistic depiction of Western painting with traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques and produced some 250 woodblock prints in his lifetime. His exquisite works, which were printed an average of more than 30 times, and sometimes nearly 100 times, are loved all over the world and are known to have been displayed in the office of Princess Diana.

For Hiroshi Yoshida, who traveled the world from a young age and continued to think about painting in a way that is uniquely Japanese, woodblock printing was one of the points he reached.
