“Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window” is an early masterpiece by the great 17th century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, in which he established his definitive painting style portraying women reading letters and engaged in other private activities under light from a window. X-ray images taken in 1979 disclosed a painting-within-a-painting, showing a cupid on the background wall. The cupid was long thought to have been painted out by Vermeer himself, yet recent findings announced in 2019 indicated that the over-painting was done by another hand.

This exhibition will display “Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window” with recent restorations revealing the image of cupid—the second display of the restored work since its unveiling at Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Also featured will be some 70 masterpieces from the Dresden museum's collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings, including works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Gabriel Metsu, and Jacob van Ruisdael.
