Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels
Finished

Artists

Iri Maruki
The painter Iri Maruki (1901-1995) used bold yet delicate ink-wash technique to create large-scale and grand landscapes. Marking the 120th anniversary of Iri’s birth, The Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels will display around 30 of works from early until his final years.
Iri was born in a farming village on the upper reaches of Otagawa river in Hiroshima. After moving to Tokyo he studied Japanese painting but feeling not fully satisfied, he joined the avant-garde Rekitei Art Association in 1938. In 1940 he joined the advocating surrealism Bijutsu Bunka Art Association, and freely using various ink wash painting techniques started creating abstract and experimental works full of vitality. In 1950 he announced “Ghost”, the first work from “Hiroshima Panels”, created in collaboration with his wife Maruki Toshi. From then 15 more works were painted in this series. On the other hand, he began exhibiting his works in different international exhibition both in Japan and overseas, such as the Japan International Art Exhibition, São Paulo Biennale and other, where his work received high recognition.
This exhibition will present not only folding screen paintings, but also ink wash painting from pre-war and postwar periods full of experimental spirit, human body sketches which were fundamental in creating “Hiroshima Panels”, never-before-exhibited works examined in recent years and collaborations with his wife Toshi. Our permanent exhibition with newly restored wall paintings “The Rape of Nankin”(1975), “Auschwitz”(1977) and “Minamata”(1980), which are collaborations with Toshi, will reopen as well (scheduled for after the middle of November, 2021).
