What Museum opened in December 2020 as an art and culture facility to showcase the valuable artwork received from artists and collectors. The museum displays the thoughts of the artists as well as the passions of the collectors who collect the works, creating a place where people can encounter art.

The Obayashi Collection Exhibition focuses on the impressive collection built up over many years by Takeo Obayashi, who is also the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the International Art Festival Aichi 2022. The exhibition will focus on the Obayashi Collection, with three simultaneous exhibitions: “Tadao Ando: Painting,” “Between the City and Me,” and “Self-History.”

The Obayashi Collection Exhibition “Between the City and Me” will feature 15 photographic works by nine artists who have captured the city from their own perspectives, using as their subjects the various elements (urban infrastructure, architecture, interiors, models, etc.) that exist “between” the city and the artists and us. Naoya Hatakeyama’s “Untitled / Osaka” series captures the transition of the city over time, while Louisa Lumbri’s “Untitled (Barragan House)” series shows the minute changes in time and personal experiences at the Barragan House, designed by architect Luis Barragan. In Thomas Demand’s “Museum H 64,” the subjects are architectural models that are created daily in the process of building in the studio of architect Kazuyo Sejima. These models represent another image of the city visualized through the camera, existing “in-between” the real city and the artist. This exhibition will create an opportunity for viewers to perceive the city through new eyes.
