For the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence, Ichihara Lakeside Museum presents an exhibition considering Japanese artists and their relationship to Mexico and its chaotic interplay of life and death, antiquity and modernity, and reality and hyperreality. Looking back on the history of exchange between Japan and Mexico, the show spotlights eight Japanese artists impacted by the history, landscapes, people, and art of Mexico, exploring their “Mexico experiences” from a variety of angles. Tamiji Kitagawa was influenced by Mexican mural art. Kojin Toneyama and On Kawara both spent time in the country after seeing an exhibition of its art. Taro Okamoto’s “Myth of Tomorrow” was inspired by Mexican art. Manga artist Shigeru Mizuki drew from Mexican folklore and tales of the supernatural. Koji Suzuki’s paintings were influenced by Day of the Dead festivities. Finally, Kaori Oda’s film “Cenote” depicts travels through Mayan caves.
