Masaharu Sato “Trace – Absence of Presence/Presence of Absence”

Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito
Finished

Artists

Masaharu Sato
Masaharu Sato made video works with the “rotoscope” technique in which a person traces pictures on the computer with a pen. He traced ordinary scenes he recorded with a video camera or a still camera. In March 2019, he passed away from cancer at the age of 45, mourned by many. His works extended to genres of contemporary art including film, animation, and media art, and were well received in and outside Japan. They depict his unique worldview in which reality and unreality intersect.
Works introduced in this exhibition include Sato’s first video, “I touch Dream #1,” which he made in Germany in 1999, and “Shinigami Sensei” (Dr. Reaper), a series he continued to work on until his death. A total of 62 works (26 videos and 36 two-dimensional works) look back on his achievements as an artist.
