Powered by the wind, the “Strand (sand) Beast (life form)” runs on the sandy beaches of the Netherlands. The entire body is made of yellow plastic tubes, and its movement, based on physical engineering, is so smooth and organic that it reminds us of a living creature. They were created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen (1948-) to solve the problem of rising sea levels in his homeland. With the aim of surviving independently on the beach after the artist’s death, the strandbeasts have acquired systems for walking, changing direction, detecting danger, and adapting to various environments. These life forms, which have repeatedly lived and died, and have continued to evolve while passing on their genes and genetic information, cross the existing categories of art and science, and present us with new possibilities.
This exhibition features more than 10 works, including the Strandbeast, which is over 10 meters long.
For those who wish to enter the exhibition on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays after July 22 (Thursday, national holiday) and during the Obon period (August 13-15) from 10:00 to 17:00, advance reservations are required.
