Artists

Yoshio Shirakawa
Yoshio Shirakawa was born in Kitakyushu, Japan in 1948, and moved to Germany and France in the 1970s to study art and philosophy. Since returning to Japan, he has continued his multifaceted artistic practice while based in Gunma Prefecture. Shirakawa’s practice ranges from social and political criticism of the values of art and art history itself created by modernization and urbanization, to activities that attempt to unravel the culture and history rooted in the local/region. They are based on his own experiences and the ideas that have influenced him.

In this exhibition, Shirakawa will present a series of drawings including ‘War Hell’ (2003), which depicts the Pacific War, and ‘Monument to the Defeat of the Pacific War, Plan 1’ (2015), as well as other works that he has created while incorporating war as a theme, and a group of works newly created for this exhibition.
