Javier Calleja
This exhibition of the Spanish artist Javier Calleja at Nanzuka, will be his third solo exhibition in Japan following the first one titled “Do Not Touch” in 2018, and the second exhibition “No Art Here”, held both at Nanzuka 2G and 3110NZ last year.

Calleja produces works that bring surprise and humor to viewers by incorporating subtle twists and interventions to various events within everyday life. Expressing a fondness for the works of René Magritte, Calleja attempts to reference and reinterpret the techniques of the surrealist master through contemporary portraiture. As testimony of such endeavor, his expressions carefully pay attention to details such as changes in color and shifts in scene, as well as gaps and discrepancies between his subjects and the messages that they convey. Furthermore, the setting for the narratives that naturally draw the attention of the viewer, are also an ingenious ploy that are executed on his part.
Calleja’s works continue to fascinate the audience even more now as the world is hit by the Covid crisis. Facing the difficulties with a witty creativity, the artist’s positive approach to life is something that can be sympathized with.

The exhibition’s title “Open Your Eyes” can be understood as a set of messages addressed to us. It can be read as a warning against the society’s tendency towards closeness and exclusiveness, as well as a revelation concerning the dignity of each of us. Ought to even be called a “pleasant preaching”, the artist’s approachable works give us courage and fill us with strong energy to cope with the challenges of this period.

All the displayed artworks in this exhibition are new. Along with three-dimensional works exhibited both inside and outdoors, canvas paintings and drawings will be part of the exhibition as well.
