Ryuzabura Shikiba (1898–1965) was born in Niigata Prefecture and studied psychiatry. In addition to his psychiatric practice, Shikiba was an amazingly prolific writer, publishing some 200 books throughout his life on subjects that ranged from the Mingei folk art movement and Van Gogh to introductory psychopathology and sex education. He was also involved in organizing exhibitions, including shows of Van Gogh reproductions and Kiyoshi Yamashita’s works. He stood at the forefront of various public interests and tastes. Shikiba’s far-reaching and enlightening activities helped shape current views of art (for example, associative concepts such as genius and madness, creation and destiny, and art and life). As both an avid follower and guide of the era, Shikiba developed an important context for modern and contemporary Japanese cultural history. Mirrors of Cerebral Ventricles is derived from the subtitle of a 1939 book in which Shikiba examines the highly individualistic trait of shifting back and forth between polar extremes of the visible (science) and invisible (art). The exhibition retraces Shikiba’s myriad pursuits through a collection of approximately 200 works and documents.
