Ayaka Horiuch
Born in 1989 and raised in Niigata, it was clear to Ayaka Horiuchi that she would pursue photography. After graduating with a degree in photography and design, she started working in a studio and started out as a cameraman assistant. Horiuchi has been an independent photographer since 2016.
“A picture is taken as I peek through the viewfinder with one eye. I hit the shutter button. In that instant, light hits and burns an image onto the film. In the small window of time that occurs when I hit the shutter, I lose sight of what I’m about to capture. All that exists in that moment is blackness. In preparing for this show, I am finally catching a glimpse of the many moments I could not see. I wonder, was I really there at that moment?”
By using film photography, Horiuchi ponders on the photographers’ role and vision in the action of capturing an image. The instant a photo is taken, the final image will difer from what the photographer initially wished to record. The outcome represents that one second that the photographer could not see. To what extent was it the photographer’s decision to capture that fleeting moment? In this solo-exhibition, Horiuchi will display a photo series shot entirely on film that focuses on everyday life simplicities, moments that vanish in the bat of an eye.
