Hiroyuki Okumura
Inspired by the freedom he observed in pyramids and other creations of ancient civilizations, Hiroyuki Okumura moved to Mexico after finishing his graduate degree in sculpture at Kanazawa College of Art and has lived and worked as an artist in Mexico for the past 30 years. His work has been shown in museums around Mexico and as public art. In recent years he exhibited in New York and will have a traveling exhibition across the United States in 2020. Okumura’s sculptures made with Mexican stone evoke dynamic and far-reaching movements that coexist with a withered fragility that draws the eye to the natural beauty and expressive richness of the stone. His works reflect Mexico’s natural landscapes and the flow of time he experiences daily there. Focusing on works 130 cm in height and 190 cm in width, this exhibition presents five of his stone sculptures. A catalogue featuring his major works and public art projects will also be published. This is a rare opportunity to see Okumura’s new works in Japan.
