Mao Wei
“Likeness” showcases Mao Wei’s recent body of works she has developed during her residency in 3331 Arts Chiyoda. Inspired by the latent relationship and indefinable emotions between human-beings and the physical world, Mao examines dialogues behind inanimate objects when she explores themes of religion, self- reflection and nature. “I started being interested in objects, in space, in what is unpredictable, in what gets left over. There is an intangible clue between these things and how they become a stand-in for time and memory narratively, metaphorically and materially.” By documenting objects placed in mysterious combinations, “Likeness” seeks to explore methods in shifting the viewer’s attention away from the perceivable, and questions the idea of ambiguous emotions and the existence of memory in how they relate to fantasy, uncertainty, and longing.
