Wooden Toys from Tohoku – Forms of Play and Prayer

Musashino Art University
Finished
Handmade Japanese toys are often created from the wood of local trees with prayers and wishes for children’s health and growth. Hariko dolls, tops, and other artisanal toys can be found all across Japan, but there is an especially wide variety of them in the northern Tohoku region. In the early 1800s, Tohoku became a popular hot spring destination and wooden toys for children were sold as tourist souvenirs. Unlike industrial-made toys, each of these objects was crafted by hand, displaying unique shapes and styles depending on its lathe work.
