Sawara hariko dolls are a traditional craft from Sawara, Katori City in Chiba Prefecture. Made from natural materials including paper, wood, and clay, these toy figurines meant for good luck and children’s amusement date back to the Edo period. Yoshiro Kamata, an 83 year-old artist whose hariko have been praised for their playful and childlike qualities, presents his creations in this retrospective – his first solo show in Tokyo. Displays including large works from a children’s stories series, as well as new hariko available for purchase. There will also be talks and a craft corner where you can try painting your own hariko.
