Mao Ishikawa
Mao Ishikawa was born and raised in Ryukyu, Okinawa - an area that was under United States Civil Administration at that time - and photographed American soldiers as well as women who worked at bars located near their military base. Her current series presented here is titled “The Great Ryukyu Photographic Picture Scrolls.” Studying the history of Okinawa’s hardships following the Satsuma clan’s invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom, she creatively photographs historical scenes staged with her friends, covering 400 years worth of history over four scrolls of about 120 meters in length. Filled with a combination of anger and humor, these picture scrolls tell the history of the area up until the Battle of Okinawa (1945) and the occupation by U.S. forces. The fourth scroll in the series was completed before Ishikawa began receiving treatment for stage 4 cancer which she learned of in February last year. This is the first time that all four scrolls have been shown together publicly.
*The exhibition will be in two parts, with two scrolls displayed at a time.

Part 1 (scrolls 1 & 2): Feb. 10 - 21
Part 2 (scrolls 3 & 4): Feb. 22 - Mar. 4
