TOP Collection : The Eternal Inspiration

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Eugène Atget, Man Ray, Charles Marville, Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama et al.
Eugène Atget is an important figure in the history of photographic expression so the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum has made a point of collecting his works since it was first established, now boasting 150 of his images in its collection. Over the years the museum has introduced his work from a variety of angles, and in this exhibition it will consider why his views of Paris at the turn of the twentieth century should have continued to exert such a strong influence over photographers up to the present day. What was the spirit of Atget that has been passed down to us throughout the twentieth century and beyond? Focusing on the varied works in the collection, this exhibition addresses this question using Atget’s own photographs as well as those by photographers who came after him.
