Guy Debord
In 1957 whilst a surge of mass media and consumption culture eroded the city of Paris, Guy Debord embarked on his psychogeographic research to articulate the effects on the surrounding contemporary urban experience. Drawing out his playful dérive on a map of psychogéographie, he traced the subjective patterns of how the urban environment transforms emotional and psychological behavior. By constructing situations through a series of experimental cinéma, he radically dismantled the mystical illusion of the spectacle. The project is comprised of historical archival material and a presentation of Debord’s cinéma. It aims to present the key concepts of Debord’s cultural critiques as inscribed in today’s theoretical literature of the avant-garde, which are continuously influencing contemporary artists in the process of reworking social relations, and the performativity of urban space.
