Artists

Jiro Takidaira
Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1921, Jiro Takidaira was the second son of a farmer in Tamagawa village. He became familiar with picture books and story books as a child, and in high school joined the manga circle, where he devoted himself to creating his own manga stories. After graduation he taught himself the art of woodcut prints and began creating works based on everyday life in rural areas. Although his artistic career was temporarily interrupted by conscription, he established his position as a woodblock artist following the end of the war.
In addition to his print works, Takigaira began binding books and producing illustrations in the late 1950s. Although his illustrations were initially drawn by hand, Takidaira transitioned to paper cutouts in the latter half of the 1960s. There began to appear in Asahi newspaper in 1969.
This exhibition will look back over the work of Takigaira, who passed away in 2009.
