British Automata: Paul Spooner and British Automata in the Present Day

Hachioji Yume Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Paul Spooner, Matt Smith, Keith Newstead
An automaton is a self-operating machine. Japan adopted automata during the Edo period, which were known as karakuri ningyo. UK artist and automata maker Paul Spooner specialises in a field known as contemporary automata. His work combines humour and an obsessive attention to detail in delightful and intriguing mechanisms. Around 60 automata by Spooner and other UK artists will be exhibited, and visitors will be able to see them operated.
