Artists

Chikuden Tanomura
Tanomura Chikuden was a literati painter during the mid-19th century Bakumatsu period. Unlike commercial painters, these artists provided paintings expressing their poetic feelings based on the Chinese style of painting toward which they aspired during the mid-Edo period. Tanomura Chikuden worked closely with literati painters and friends including Rai Sanyo, Uragami Gyokudo, and Aoki Mokubei. This retrospective, marking the 180th anniversary of Tanomura’s death, presents around 70 of his works, including the Important Cultural Property “Study in the Grove of Blossoming Plum Trees”.
