In 1889 Katsunan Kuga established the newspaper “Nippon”, a publication which determined to maintain its independence from any political patronage and provide a stringent criticism of the government in move to show the true direction of the country. It also took a pioneering lead establishing the pressure group of journalists campaigning for the abolition of censorship in the printed press. With Kuga’s high principle he attracted many esteemed cultural figures such as Shiki Masaoka, and even after his death this principle came to be transmitted far and wide, contributing significantly to the foundations of the modern press in Japan today. This exhibition follows the people and ideas behind “Nippon” through a collection of over 200 documents and panel displays.
