Shouen Uemura and the Three Generations of the Uemura Family
The bijinga (beautiful women paintings) of Shouen Uemura (1875-1949) demonstrate elegant refinement with exquisite detail also seen in the kachoga (flower and bird paintings) of her son, Shoukou Uemura (1902-2001). Shoukou Uemura’s own son, Atsushi Uemura (b. 1933) carries on the spirit of his father in contemporary kachoga. Spotlighting this family of three generations of Nihonga painters, this exhibition for the New Year lets visitors rediscover the beauty of Nihonga in works created with mineral pigment paints evoking seasonal changes long-loved by the Japanese people. In addition to their paintings, prints by the three Uemura artists are also on display.
