Toshiko Akamatsu and the South Pacific Islands

Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels
Finished

Artists

Toshiko Akamatsu
From January through June of 1940, Toshiko Akamatsu (later Toshi Maruki) was stationed in present-day Micronesia, then known as the South Pacific Islands under Japanese rule. More than 200 of Maruki’s sketches, oil paintings, and ink paintings depicting these islands are on display in this exhibition allowing us to reconsider how this artist viewed the people and landscapes of these former colonies.
