Spring approaches, and with it, the annual display of the National Treasure “Irises screens.” In this year’s display, “Irises” by Kōrin Ogata (1658–1716) will vie for the title of most beautiful alongside the “Wisteria” screens painted some 70 years later by another Kyoto artist, Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795). The iris screens present a stylized quality reminiscent of textile designs rendered in sumptuous pigments, while the wisteria screens fuse close observation of the subject with novel technical prowess. With this opposing pair of works as a focal point, the gallery will enchant visitors with the beauty of pre-modern paintings in its selection of Rimpa School gold-ground screens and works by the Maruyama-Shijō School painters who followed Ōkyo.
