Sabine Pigalle
The starting point of Sabine Pigalle’s “Timequakes” series is the confusion she experienced during the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Interpreting physical ruins as temporary sediment, Pigalle combined 15th - 17th century court portraits with contemporary photographs and further fused together the abstract photos taken during her multiple visits to Tokyo. Paintings of masters such as Jan van Eyck, Raffaello Santi, and Leonardo da Vinci are not so much the source of her ideas but the materials of her own paintings. By making use of these classic works, Pigalle advances the compression of time and creates multiple layers of memory, making us reexamine our historical assets through rearrangements of composition and structure. Her collage-like contemporary works show us the strata of various periods of time, striking peculiar chords of affinity in each of us. This sense of affinity is the very thing that gives Pigalle’s works their atemporality. Her blended portraits serve as bridges between two media of expression— the powerful portraiture tool of painting and photography. They bridge portraiture and abstract painting and unite the past and the present in art.
