These works were inspired by Naito’s visit two years ago to early era Christian churches in Armenia, a country located between the eastern and western worlds. During her trip, which was part of a project to collect rubbings from Armenian cross stones, Naito was moved by the religious relics of the Armenian people that remain on the walls of the country’s many unrestored ancient churches. The power of prayer shared by people of different religions is a theme in these 15 paintings with titles including “Message Board From the Dark,” “Words at the Beginning,” “Burning Words,” and “Flowing Words.”
