This retrospective showcases 79 oil paintings, drawings, and other works spanning the career of Russia’s preeminent modern realist painter. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ilya Repin belonged to the progressive Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) school. His historical paintings criticized societal contradictions and stirred Russia’s folk consciousness. He also produced work with revolutionary themes and portraits of cultural figures distinguished by his keen observations.
