Tomoyoshi Sakamoto
Sakamoto is an up-and-coming young artist who graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts only this year, but has already won much acclaim at his graduation and group exhibitions. Sakamoto's paintings would ordinarily perhaps be classed as imaginary world paintings, but they almost possess a symbolism of their own. This is not an ethical or logical system of signs as per the ancient Western artistic tradition, bur rather a sort of post-manga form of expression that is different from either Surrealism or Pop. Sakamoto's images seem to drift and wander, but they have been fictionalized by the money game and the art market, linking us to the real world of uncertainty, reflecting military unease, for instance. Casting a sidelong glance at the ways of the world, taking slight and ironic jabs that are more well-meaning than dark.

Born in 1985, Sakamoto is part of a new generation that carries on from the Noughties J pop generation of artists, with a distinct style even this early on in his career. Although often compared to other "girly painting" artists, Sakamoto says that "even if I draw girls, they are in fact a kind of self-portrait." This is the first solo exhibition of this immensely talented next-generation artist. One to watch!
