"Museum Collection Exhibition: Radiance of Kimono/ Beauty of Lacquer, Wood and Bamboo Works"

Crafts Gallery at the National Museum of Modern Art
Finished
"Radiance of the Kimono"
The sophisticated beauty of the Kimono was nurtured throughout the long history of Japanese culture. Nowadays, because it is closely tied with the old tradition, people see the kimono as detached from everyday life. Especially in the postwar period, Japanese people's lifestyle dramatically changed, and kimonos almost became a thing in the past. However, the art of the kimono has been mastered by contemporary designers and artisans with a new sensibility. This exhibition showcases kimonos, sashes, and textiles that carry a gorgeous Japanese aesthetic.

"The Beauty of Lacquer, Wood and Bamboo"
Because of their heavy reliance on natural materials, lacquer, wood and bamboo works are sometimes thought to owe their beauty to nature. What we look at are, in fact, pieces of nature deliberately chosen by artists—carefully elaborated artifacts. Presenting about 100 lacquer, wood and bamboo works, this show examines the beauty of nature transformed through shaping and ornamentation.
